Hello!
I am an interdisciplinary research scientist with expertise in machine learning, a background in statistics, and experience in experimental psychology. Since February 2025, I am an Assistant Professor at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), Leiden University. From 2021 to 2024, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Brain & Cognition at KU Leuven, working on image aesthetics in Johan Wagemans' GestaltReVision Lab and as a member of the KU Leuven Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
I received my B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Statistics from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul in 2012, 2014, and 2018, respectively. The university is one of the oldest in Turkey and is known for blending art and science. My interest in machine learning began during my graduate studies, and in my Ph.D., I specialized in deep learning, which has remained the focus of my research on neural networks. From 2014 to 2018, I worked as a research assistant in the Department of Statistics at Mimar Sinan, and afterwards taught there as a full-time faculty member until 2021.
As a statistician and machine learning researcher, I enjoy working in interdisciplinary research groups. Collaborating with scientists from diverse fields has greatly enriched my knowledge and broadened my perspective.
I also value independent work, whether in single-author papers or projects that explore new directions. I am always open to where curiosity leads.
